Gokova Ruzgar Kiteboarding beach (Turkey)

Gokova Bay with its 6 months continuous wind and open space - 3 km of shallow sandy beach - is naturally very suitable for kiteboarding and has become one of the most attractive locations for beginners as well as having made a memorable impression on professional kiteboarder.
The beach is 3 kilometre long and doesn’t have any rocks, buildings, power lines or any other obstacles which might be dangerous for kiteboarding.

The wind in Gokova Bay starts in May when the weather temperature gets warmer and continues its rate until November. There is almost no windless day during this 6 months period of the year.

The wind starts as a calm sea-breeze at around 9 a.m. and increases up to 18-20 knot with the influx of air temperature.

The sea is shallow for 150 metre and the bottom is purely sand. For the first 50 metre the water is completely free of waves and calm.

Wind details:

The wind in Gokova Bay starts in May when the weather temperature gets warmer and continues its rate until November. There is almost no windless day during this 6 months period of the year. The wind - thermal wind enhanced by the Venturi effect created by the steep cliffs on both side of 40 km long Gokova Gulf - starts as a calm sea-breeze at around 9-10 a.m. and increases up to 18-20 knot (4-5 Bf) with the influx of air temperature. There are hardly any gusty winds in Gokova Bay which is another reason why this area is such a splendid place for beginners and those who want to improve their kiteboarding practice. The increase of the wind rate throughout the day allows for different levels to practice at different times. It usually stays up untill 18.00.

On the water:

Water quality:

clean

Best tide:

no dependency

Waves:

flat / shallow

Consistency:

scarce (5-20 days/yr)

Water details:

The sea is shallow for 150 metre and the bottom is purely sand. For the first 50 metre the water is completely free of waves and calm. Small waves occur after 50 metre depending on the wind’s power. The water temperature is suitable enough to do kiteboarding without wearing a wetsuit. There are 7 rivers feeding Gokova Bay so the salt level is quite low on the shore. These rivers also play the role of cleaning the sea. Choppy most of the times, but can get 2-3 feet waves once in a while. No currents, no tides.

When is flat:

Day activities:

Great wild and outdoors life: white water kayaking, rafting, sea kayaking, mountain biking, downhill biking, rock climbing, canyoning, abseiling, horse riding

Night scene:

There are a few bars by the seaside in Akyaka and some local restaurants by the creek but life is not so much exciting for party fans. Try Marmaris at night (28 km)
