Galu Beach

This is a fantastic all round kite spot. It has sideshore winds,safe and spacious lagoon,waves and flatwater. It has gorgeous boardshort weather all year round without any scary creatures or currents to be worried about. It is easy to get to, easy and cheap to get around and has plenty of other activities to do and cool african stuff to see. the locals are very nice and very friendly, and is very safe despite what the media says.

From Mombasa airport, take a taxi (30euro) or matatu (2euro) to Diani Beach (southcoast), from Diani keep going south about 5mins on the beach road and ask for kenyaways kite village or any public access.

Beach rules:

Beachboys are very friendly but can be irritating. Don't hesitate to tell them to leave you alone.

Weather:

The climate is equatorial and therefore is warm all year round. The no-go months are april-may when it rains,or oct-nov when it is flat calm.The water is so warm you never need a wetsuit.

Wind details:

The wind are tradewinds which blow from the NE or N between dec-mar and is known as the NE monsoon or locally as the Kaskazi. It is a strong, consistent wind from 10am - 6pm. by the end of march the long rains come until the beginning of June where the wind switches to the SE monsoon known as Kusi. It is a very strong less predictable wind that also can be gusty. By the end of Sept the wind dies down and brings hot breezeless days which builds up until the kaskazi blows again in mid-dec.

Water details:

At low tide the beach is a wide expanse of soft white sand stretching as wide as 1km. the water is flat and shallow being protected by the reef.At low tide the reef is exposed and impossible to ride the reef break.At high tide, the reef break is great but at its highest the beach can be fully submerged and difficult to land and launch.

Night scene:

a vibrant beach bar called 40s followed by Shakatak the local disco experience....
plenty of bars, clubs and restaurents available and closeby.
