Melbourne - Brighton Kite Beach

Wide beach, good for launching. Locals venture there after work, and even on a average day you'll find someone to help you launch.

Launch from the kite area on the beach and head south to Green Pt a few hundred metres to find the odd bay wave as the chop breaks over the reef - tiny, but can be fun. The reef is bare at low tide.

Beach rules:

Use common sense! This is a popular beach for bathers, but they tend to stay away on windy days :) Plenty of grass to set and pack up. The beach is wide but not everly with large sand. There is enough space to launch and land without a hasle. Pick your launching and landing spot carefully. On S winds the landing is rocky if you go downwind. On N winds there are safe landing areas but beware of the family swimming beach.

Weather:

Wetsuit mandatory in winter, usually not necessary in summer (temperatures often over 30°C)

Wind details:

In the afternoon after a hot day, you may have a seabreeze from SW. There is not really any consistency in the wind direction over the area of Melbourne. However, starting from October to February the wind will be mostly coming from SW in the afternoon. You would have to take a look at the forecast anyway. Kiteable on SSW-WSW and NW-N. N and S are usually gusty because of landmass turbulence. Be mindful the weather when using the nothernly winds as conditions may change rapidly.

On the water:

Water quality:

clean

Best tide:

no dependency

Waves:

small waves (<1m)

Consistency:

consistent (61-120 days/yr)

Water details:

Rough and choppy. Normal bay conditions. On good days the waves are big enough for kickers. There is a reef at the south of the beach. On low tide it may be only partially submerged. It kicks up some nice small waves and smoothens the water but it may also surprise you in a nasty way.
