North of Cairns you can find Yorkeys Knob spot, an open beach running north to south with predominately south easterly winds averaging 15-20knots. There is some wave action but is usually less than 1/2 meter. There's an excellent rigging area and plenty of room up wind of the comp area for free ride practice.
There are some flat riding area depending on the sand banks. There are 600 meters of rideable area before you get to the river mouth where you will find really nice flat conditions, but there are crocodiles and is not recommended for people who spend a lot of time in the water.
If you are wanting to kitesurf forget about the summer period - not only is there a lack of wind, there's stinging jellyfish that can kill you.
Cairns is home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest marine park in the world, and is considered the heart of the Tropical North. Its northern beaches stretch for 25km along a beautiful coastline - warm seas, miles of sandy beaches and great kiteboarding locations make it an idyllic tropical kiteboarding/holiday destination.
