Viana do Castelo / Cabedelo

Viana do Castelo is a small town with a population of 46000. It was mainly a fishing town and still boasts a coastal fishing industry of some importance in Portugal. A ferry or the bridge takes visitors across the river to the beautiful pictoresque sandy beach of Praia Cabedelo that stretches as far south as the popular holiday resort of Esposende. In Spring/Summer Cabedelo beach is destination for kitesurfers and windsurfers from all over europe. It's big bay with 2 rocky piers and no obstacles offers a scenic spot to ride. The few crowds, lot of space and absence of obstacles make Cabedelo a very safe spot too.

If you follow usual kitesurf rules you will have no problems. People are usually helpful and nice so if you need anything there's always someone ready to help.

Weather:

Mild weather (air 15-28°C). Wetsuit needed all year long: 2mm in summer, 4/3mm in winter.

Water details:

being at a river mouth, water (13-18°C) tends to be colder respect to other areas in Portugal. Good peaks and barrels on good days. Starts working at less than 1m and holds up to 2m+. Easy 2-4 feet right handers waves outside the pier.
