Máncora is a sunny surf town very popular with travellers, located in the North Coast of Peru. It has great side-onshore wind most days during it's windy season from April-May through December-January. The wave in Máncora is long and pure and many people use directional boards and kitesurf the wave here.

Beach rules:

Like any spot that is good for surfing, give the right away to the surfers that are paddling in, if they are in the line up. Also, be respectful of the locals. Practice good wave riding etiquette by not short jibing other kiters that are further up the point, get into the rotation..... and take your turn. If you are jumping around on a twin tips and guys are kiting the waves, get out of the waves and jump around in the bay out of the way. Don't leave trash on the beach.

Weather:
Mancora is gifted with amazing weather year around. With the clashing of the warm and cool ocean currents just to the south, a great micro climate has been created. The average air temperature 80°F all year with cool nights. The ocean water in and around Mancora is trunks 365 days a year. There is the off chance that you will need a spring suit to cut some chill from the wind. Keep in mind that the water just 45 min south is much colder and full suits are mandatory in the winter and spring suit to shorty in the summer. The water temp is very dependent on the currents.

Very good thermal winds and very consistent. A sunny day brings on strong wind in the late morning and throughout the afternoon. The wind direction is always S to SW and this is side to side on for the bay in Mancora.

On the water

Water quality:
clean
Best tide:
no dependency
Waves:
medium waves (1-2.5m)
Consistency:
sometimes (21-60 days/yr)
Water details:
The water here is beautiful. In Mancora you have everything from the point which has a great left hand peeling wave that is pretty easy to kite on to beach break launch ramps that are more down in the bay. The point starts off as cobble stone rocks that on a low tide can be exposed and will take your fins right off. High tide there is nothin to worry about. the inside of the point is all sand.

When is flat

Day activities:

Surfing. Girls watching.

Night scene:

Some bars and restaurants in Mancora. Be very careful where you eat, as many beach front shacks lack refrigeration. Samana Chakra restaurant is excellent, and Geko's great for pizza and garlic bread - both owned by kiters

The wind is nice here - very stable - comes in side-on-shore. Cloudy mornings delay the wind, cloudy afternoons kill the wind. I'm told it is mostly sunny in Mancora but with El Nino brings more clouds. The water is nice, the wave is great when a swell comes in. Going south the wind is just stronger but the water is colder (at least a shorty). Secret spot: Cabo Blanquillo - go there when the tide is low in late morning during a swell for the most awesome wave-riding. For beginners - a good place to learn with unusually low prices but only one school is the real thing and is certified and offer certifications - still cheap. Better to bring your own gear - rentals are not that cheap probably because is hard to bring equipment into the country - at least the kite - you can rent the board and kite for cheap.

Mancora is a great base but the wind is not that consistent here. 45 mins south of Mancora is the phenominal Lobitos with great wind and chunky swell with no people.

enjoy

Bring a 7, 9 and 12 meters kite plus short 3/2 mm and full suit 3/2 mm. Nearby Lobitos (1 hour car ride)give you best waves for kiteboarding too !!! Transportation easy from Mancora. Best seafood in the entire world and very cheap. Mancora has 2 ATM machines. Plenty hotels all budgets.
