Golden Gate @ Crissy Field , SF, CA.

Alcatraz

Here I am, Crissy Field, wind blowing from the NW at 20 knts average...
I´m riding a 9m, and I start heading out towards the GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE....

Cold Water, good wind, great environment around as they have the world championship of windsurfing, so there is a lot going on in the water.... wich by the way, was really good to see Mexican Faces around, Victor, Adam and Jessica.

This kiting session, was not a regular kite session, there was no jumps, no tricks, but it was more like doing something symbolic, something unique, and something that not many people has the privilege to do.... I just want to share with you, what is the feeling of kiting on such an ICONIC location.... some people say, that the GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE, is the Most beautiful site to DIE... ( ¿¿¿¿¿¿???????)....

Looking for a spot in So Jersey to learn & practice. Session @ Kiteboard Hatteras ended after a six hour session. Two days later we were evacuated due to Irene. We have our own gear and were practicing body drags & tacking. Still have not done any board starts and a little leery about practicing in the ocean. We used our Hydras @ Brigantine for about 25 hrs. We will travel from Delaware to Long Beach Island.
Very anxious to continue while everything is still fresh in our minds, & muscles

We got up early and headed from Austin to Texas City to go kitesurfing. It’s a pretty long drive so thank god the wind was good there in the afternoon. When we arrived to the lagoon the wind was only 13 knots. Not quite enough for my 9m but it was all I had so I decided to give it a try because not kiting was not a possibility. I had to borrow someone’s board here because the airline would have charged me over $100 for luggage if I brought mine so I had this huge 139 Liquid Force board to ride. Low wind, big board…..oh well the challenge will just make me better in the long run. The riding area there is awesome. There is around 500 feet of thigh high water and it’s really warm. Perfect spot for teaching and fishing. While I was riding I kept running over fish and some of them were so big they would made a thud sound as they hit my fin. On one tact a fish jumped up, hit my thigh, bounced up and smacked me right in the mouth. For the next 20 min all I could smell was fish.

This week end I got the opportunity to be in a kitesurfing film with Oxbow www.oxboworld.com. I was approached by the producer of the film to do the "lifestyle" part. They already have all the footage of their team riders but needed the rest of the footage. The scenery at Amayo Kite Beach is amazing with the wind turbines and the volcano's creating an almost magical atmosphere. The entire process of making a film is interesting. It's crazy how just a few minutes of film took over 11 hours to shoot. There is a lot that goes into it and the rider has to be good. In exchange for my time in doing the film, the producer shot a promotional video for me, which I can use to try and get sponsored. I spent more then a few hours taking jump after jump which is actually is hard to do on spot with changing conditions. When the wind kicks up so do the waves and Toma could only stand so deep in the water. Trying to get a good jump off between the white wash was brutal.

Along my constant quest for kiting partners, I managed to meet two interesting characters nick-named Jesus (or so I call him) and Mongo. Jesus is one of the coolest older dudes I’ve ever met. I won’t say his age so I don’t ruin his endless opportunities of picking up gorgeous young single women. When your “that” age, have a 6 pack and kite like a m*th*r f**k*r your bound to have your pick of the litter and I don’t want to ruin that for him.

Amayo Kite Beach

Late one hungover Sunday night I stopped in one of the many local pubs in San Juan del Sur to get a glass of water and hang with my bartender buddy. One of the other patrons sitting at the bar was interested in taking kitesurfing lessons the next day with me so I gave him my number and told him to give me a call. Normally when this happens people never follow through so I wasn’t expecting much. The next day he did call last minute and wanted to go out for an afternoon lesson. I was not really feeling too into teaching that day but making money is always good especially when you live in a tourist town. We got together and headed out to Kite Beach around 1:30pm. When we arrived the wind was only around 10 knots and I was a little worried we couldn’t complete “day 1” of the IKO lesson plan. Typically the wind here in Nicaragua dies off between 11am and 3pm leaving early in the morning and pre-sunset as good riding times.

Yesterday I discovered an epic riding area. I knew it existed but just hadn´t found it yet. The other day I was on my way to the border to pick up my mom and as I passed the wind farm I noticed the water levels of the lake dropped and a bit of beach emerged. The beach is part of an eco-community called La Joya. I spoke with the project manager Himat about wanting to kite from his beach and he was ok with it as long as we joined him for lunch. La Joya is just past the wind farm on the way to the Costa Rica border. The land has rivers on either side which created a nice sandy, shallow bottom. The wind comes clean across 3,089 sq mi of water and is south of the volcano so the wind is less turbulent. Yesterday was a great wind day and for most of it I rode my 7m in like 25knots. At one point the wind died down but I had my 12m ready to go and that worked fine. La Joya is a bump and jump area but the size of the waves make for good air time.

I'd been watching the website windguru all last week in anticipation of the upcoming wind this week. I made plans to go to San Jorge on Sunday and have Jason shoot some photos. He agreed to help me in making marketing material and trying to get a sponsor. Jason is an amazing photographer so I was pretty excited. Early Sunday morning we packed up and headed out just as a nice set of rain clouds were rolling in from off the volcano so we just sat, chilled out at Gato Negro and waited. Eventually they passed but I was feeling a little discouraged. San Jorge is packed on Sunday afternoons with local beach goers which makes for a tricky launch, especially when Jason has never lifted a kite before. He managed to do a really good job of launching my new 12m in only 12-15 knot winds with tones of cars and people around.

I’m starting to develop a routine here in San Juan now. It’s taken quite a long time to do because I have been moving around a lot in the past two ½ months but now I found a house to rent by the month. It’s nothing fancy, something equivalent to a favela but it’s only $120 a month and a close walk to town. It’s nice being able to finally unpack my bags. I’ve been basically on the go since September 2007 and to be honest with you I would like to chill out for awhile.

Yesterday I did my first official lesson here in Nicaragua. I ended up taking Oliver, a local surf pro out to a baseball field near the lake to do the first part of the lesson. The wind this week is good but I ended up using my new 7m as the "trainer kite" because I was having a hard time catching the wind from the ground. It ended up working great and after only one hour he was feeling comfortable enough to get in the water so we jumped in the truck to San Jorge. I would have liked to do the body dragging right from the beach access near the baseball field but it was pretty rocky. Anyhow taking the kite down and set it up again but it was good practice for Oliver. When we arrived at San Jorge to my surprise the beach was actually cleaner then the last time I was there, no dirty diapers this time!! What a bonus and we ended up having the water to ourselves, which was nice not having to worry about my student crashing the kite near swimmers.

Due to a record setting rainfall season here in central america, Lake Nicaragua currently is lacking any kind of beach which is a bit of a problem for setting up. Water is actully hugging the beach front restaurant patio's. I found a small amount of dirt / sand at San Jorge beach to set-up. The wind was blowing onshore so it was possible to set up inbetween the curious kids and the piles of garbage. I must admit having to walk between dirty diapers while setting up my lines was not the nicest of experiences but once your on the water you forget about all that. The thrill of being the only one on the water with a growing captive audience far outweighs the challenges of getting there.

Summer/Fall 2009 Synopsis: an unusual season

As I wrap up the West Michigan summer/fall kiting season for 2009 I look back and think…“how odd”! The weather systems on the Great Lakes, as well as many other regions like the East Coast, seemed off-kilter. Listening to recent weather discussions by meteorologists it is all starting to make sense, but the scientific explanation will not be of much comfort to the many wind starved kiters who endured a season of unreliable wind.

Michigan 2009: Mid-Summer Synopsis and the Sail North

Upon my return to the shores of Lake Michigan in mid-May I was greeted by a solid run of good “small kite” conditions...but June 2009 turned out to be somewhat disappointing and uncharacteristically calm – although it was still possible to ride 14 out of 30 days. It seems that the June/July weather patterns around the entire country were somewhat out of whack: cold and wet in the Midwest and Northeast...but lots of wind in Western Florida!!!

So far July has yielded 15 out of 25 days, so you can't complain about that. However these have not been the typically reliable forecasted winds we expect, but rather the kind of winds you need to “be there” for when it's happening – which makes it awfully nice to live 3 blocks from the water. Still with slightly less kiting than normal it has been a great season for sailing boats - regular 7 to 12 kts winds makes for perfect big-boat conditions.

(or..the Season of the Down Winder...or Year of East Coast Mission for Waves):

OK, now we're talking!!! March and April '09 have been off the hook, making up nicely for the the early winter here! These two months really carried the season here...yielding 45 good kiting days in 2 months. Warm weather and warm water finally arriving with great winds, great kiting, great sailing...I almost need a vacation from this...(alright maybe NOT). March and April have delivered over 70% of good rideable days. The total for the season, from December 1st 2008 thru April 30th 2009: 76 legitimate riding days, or around 50%. In addition to that I was able to enjoy 30 days of sailing on the catamaran - which, together, put me on the water, powered by the wind, almost 5 days/week for 6 months! Can't complain!

Florida Winter 2009
& The Worldwide Crisis

As the worldwide economic crisis began sinking its teeth in earnest during the late fall of 2008 I pondered what the winter season would turn out like in Florida. Sadly, as expected, the kiting industry has been hit hard – gear sales are way off hurting all manufacturers; lesson traffic is way down hurting all the instructors; travel and vacation budget have been all but eliminated for many people worried about their finances. My own lesson traffic has been down 60%! and very few kites and boards sold.

The winter here (December thru February) was colder than I ever remember it from past years– and to make matters worse – much less reliable wind. I remember 2 years ago when we had 17 consecutive weekends of great wind – and this year we have had maybe 2 or 3! Could there be some strange connection between the global economy and lack of wind?! It certainly feels that way.

2008 MI Kiting Fall Climax, 26 October 2008

As bright blazing autumn foliage colors of golds, reds, and purples illuminate the shoreline with that unique glowing afternoon light, the watermen of Lake Michigan watch and wait eagerly for the winds and waves that arrive this time of year. The water is clear and cold, the waves are packing more power, the surfboards and the small kites emerge on the beaches like some primordial annual ritual. Rounding the last bend in the road to the beach hearts start to beat faster as the sand blows like smoke down the road, the snow fences and front-end loaders engaged in a futile battle against nature - one property owner posts a sign inviting people to take some "free sand" and in neighborly competition at few houses down "free-er sand" is advertised... This is my favorite time of the year here in West Michigan, and before heading South for the winter, I love riding here - as long as I can keep my fingers warm!

The kiting since I returned here on May 12 has been spectacular. July 15 marked the 50th session since I got back 75 days earlier. That works out to 68% of days kiteable, or roughly 5 days/week! And total kiteable days 12 May thru 11 August: 63 days!

The big lake water did not warm up much until mid-June, and there were many days when water temps were in the high 40's!! but for some reason it didn't seem to bother me at all – I guess all the good kiting kept me warm...plus an Ocean Rodeo Pyro Pro drysuit with lots of fleece layers, a hood and booties.

Hi All,
It's been a while since I last wrote about southern Spain (Tarifa) and the waves.

Winter and Spring are always a blast down here - and this year has been no exception.

I moved down last year (2007) in Febuary - and already in Feb - I was starting to hit the waves on my new found "wave" legs. I had as yet not bought a surf-board - so I was still surfing the waves on a twinT - which is bollocks.

Anyway - I thought I had the bees knees last year when I got like a full week with sun-shine (20 degrees) and 2 to 3 metre waves.

But last weekend - WHAT THE FU__!!!!!

Winf guru had started promising A SWELL - and they meant     SWELL.

We were all looking at the reports with big wide eyes - 4 to 6 metre waves they were promising.

Since returning here on 5/19 I have logged (out of 56 calendar days) 36 legitimately good kitesurfing days, some of them epic – and this does not include at least 4-5 days that I could have ridden here or at Little Point Sable (45 miles North). Other than driving 7-8 miles South of my usual launch spot for a few short down wind rides I have not traveled away from Muskegon to kite – not even once!
In summary, (best case scenario) you could have ridden almost 40 out of 56 days!!! That’s 71% kiteable days! We have only had 4 or 5 really good wave days so far, but they have been fun! Tomorrow I am considering a 12 mile down-winder in the waves, which are forecast to be 5-6 feet, winds SW 18-28 kts!

Upon my return to the shores of Lake Michigan I was treated to a nice long streak of riding (8 days out of the first 9 days I was home). To date we have had 17 good riding days out of the past 25…not bad numbers. The conditions here over the past 3 weeks have varied from big kite sessions to fully lit 7m conditions with decent waves. We’ve done some down winders, some big lake wave-riding, and some butter sessions in the lee of the long Muskegon pier heads. During Several NE to SE days we rode on Muskegon Lake…and it’s noteworthy to mention that it is possible to ride here in practically every wind direction!
